Hiking Lake Texoma - Best Trails for First Timers

Eisenhower State Park, located 7 miles west of Denison, TX, has an 8 mile trail with many starting and ending points making it the perfect trail for beginning hikers and family hikes. The stunning views of Lake Texoma from the tall bluffs along the trail make the journey enjoyable for hikers of all skill levels.
The trails are clean and well maintained. Please practice Leave No Trace to preserve the beauty of our natural resources. Pack out everything you pack in and leave behind everything you didn’t bring with you.
The trails at Eisenhower are as interesting and diverse as nature itself. Glimpse at pre-historic sea life preserved through the years in spiraled fossil shapes scattered near the shoreline. The park is home to deer and other small animals, as well as a number of different species of birds. Bring your phone along to capture photographic memories of your outings, navigating and in case of an emergency, but don’t let yourself be distracted by it.
Eisenhower trails are great for beginning hikers because they are sectioned by distance and difficulty. Armadillo Hill Trail is short and has been cleared of most big rocks and other hazards to first timers. You should be able to complete this hike in and out in less than an hour.
Ike’s Hike is a little more rugged, easing you into a moderate trail taking about a half day to discover. This trail is also designated for biking for those more adventurous and much more physically fit than I.
Hiking is about connecting with nature. Try to be present in your walk for the most satisfying experience. I’m big on journals. I have one for just about every subject. Hiking is no exception. Writing helps me remember the most enjoyable aspects of the day. Noting the people, animals or plants you encounter on each walk seal it in your mind, making a lasting impression. Try journaling about your hiking adventures to mark your progress along the way. You will be surprised at what you find along the way.

Fishing Report from TPWD (Aug. 13)

GOOD. Water stained; 79 degrees; 1.23 feet above pool. Fishing with topwaters for the first hour of the day and getting some fish that way, then quickly switch over to slabs to finish filling the cooler. The fish that are being slabbed are out in deeper water and the fish that are throwing topwaters on are in shallower water and it's been very good. It's actually improved since last week. This is the kind of bite expected this time of year and it's been very good fishing. Report by John Blasingame, Adventure Texoma Outdoors. Striper fishing will pick up on the backside of the full moon. Fish continue to school up and make their runs down ledges and across flats. Topwaters, swimbaits and slabs have been working on active schools near the islands and on bluff walls. Catfishing is good on punch bait for channels in 20-25 feet of water near stumps off points and humps in the main lake. Cut shad on deep flats and off river ledges for blues as they are schooled up in deeper water. Crappie can be found on brush and structure in 15-25 feet of water. Fish will be off points and main lake ledges in late summer pattern. Electronics are key in locating active fish. Report by Jacob Orr, Lake Texoma, Guaranteed Guide Service.
