Hey friends, it's Simon from Lake Hub
0:03
Today we're talking trash. It's the Great American Cleanup. It's springtime. It's time for spring cleaning and that includes our public spaces, especially around our lakes, right
0:13
So I'm around one of my favorite local lakes around my house and this is my land, this
0:17
is your land, and this is not okay and we're going to do something about it
0:21
So I'm out here with the Keep America Beautiful Great American Cleanup
0:26
Now every year, let's say in a normal year, in the before times, pre-COVID, right
0:36
There would be hundreds of volunteers out here and it would be one day, one Saturday
0:40
in springtime, usually in March in my area at least, where everybody rallies together
0:46
We all meet up and we all hit the trail and it's a cool event to everybody participate together
0:51
You know, you spend half a day outside just picking up trash and it's pretty cool to be
0:56
part of that, right? And we're just loading and you can see it. You can just see thousands of pounds of trash getting removed from public spaces, which
1:02
is cool. But this year and last year, that didn't happen. So what they did was they went remote, right
1:10
At least the chapters in my area went remote and independent. So they still supply to everybody but, you know, you have time slots and you do it by
1:19
yourself or you do it with a small group of friends and family and it just doesn't have
1:26
the same rally spirit. But that got me thinking of a different way, a different mentality for cleaning up our
1:33
public spaces. What if every single time, every single one of us went out to the lake, we went fishing
1:43
we went on a trail walk, we went on a hike, mountain bike ride
1:47
What if every single time we just took a grocery sack and packed up more trash than we brought in
1:54
Just one sack full. What if millions and millions of people jumped on board with that
1:59
Now we're mobilizing everybody who's enjoying the public spaces. It's not that much work
2:06
I pack trash bags and grocery sacks with me anyway, just because they're handy
2:11
So if you make a habit out of it and we just pack out one bag at a time, now we're fighting
2:18
millions of pounds with millions of pounds and we don't end up with that
2:23
That's some traction. So again, I'm Simon. I'm with Lake Hub and we are sharing the joy of lake life
2:30
That includes everything that has to do with lakes, being on the lakes, in and around the
2:35
lakes and we just love our lakes and we want to take care of them
2:39
So if you're on board with that, subscribe because we've got tons of fun stuff coming
2:43
at you. Next steps. Are you in? Are you with me? Come on now
2:52
Let's all ride together. This is our land, right? Let's take ownership of it
2:57
This is the people's land. We don't need agencies telling us to do this stuff
3:02
It's up to you. It's up to me. So let's do it. Commit
3:06
Stand with me. Show your kids. You know, teach the next generation how important this is
3:12
It's really not that hard. It's super simple. So all it takes is you saying yes
