What's up guys, it's Simon from Lake Hub
0:02
Today we're talking about the perfect pocket knife for hiking. Come to you hikers
0:06
I'm not talking about backpacking. I've got one knife that's really good for backpackers
0:10
but if you're counting ounces, it's really best you go ultralight. I'm talking about just day hikers
0:16
You like hiking a couple times a month, maybe. When you go camp in, you take the kids or the dogs out on a
0:22
you know, like a one or two mile loop around the lake. Something like that
0:26
If you just enjoy hiking, you like getting outside, trails like this, then I've got a couple knives you got to take with you, all right
0:34
Now, I'm going to be talking about three knives. They're all-American-made knives. They're
0:38
lightweight, pretty compact, and a great kind of all-purpose just-in-case knives. All right, first off, I want to show you a full-size knife. This is a buck spitfire
0:48
All right. This is a USA-made buck. You can tell right there. It's always etched on the blade
0:54
or you might see the state of Idaho stamp down here. There's an American-made, American flag on the box
0:59
or the packaging that's how you can tell it's an American-made buck not all of
1:02
them are American-made these days but this one absolutely is there's a couple
1:08
show colors off the shelf like orange olive drab gray I like this orange because
1:13
I can see this thing from a mile away if I drop it and I've done that okay
1:17
so in order to get your knife back when you out in the woods make sure that you get a color that you can see it funny people get camo handled knives Not a big fan Not a big fan because when I dropped that thing now I got extra work to do just to find it
1:32
So I like this blaze orange personally. I like the full size handle
1:37
I can get a full four-finger grip here. There's even a finger toil, kind of a semi-fingered oil here if I want to choke up
1:44
It's got this hump on the back of the blade. So it's very, very ergonomic
1:48
It's lightweight for the size because of the aluminum scale. and I really like this blade profile too, this drop point
1:56
It's got kind of a heavy duty top end here. I don't know if you can see that
2:02
It's just in a really high grind. I just really like this blade
2:07
It's 420 high carbon steel, which is like the typical buck knife steel
2:12
You can get, like I said, you can get some higher end steel on this thing. But for my money, $40, $45, great
2:20
size knife right there. It's got a it's got a little sibling here. This is a Spitfire
2:26
mini. Same everything same kind of design same feel in the hand, same materials, same, you know
2:35
blade profile nearly. It's a little bit different edge. Full choil right here so you can get a full
2:44
four grip otherwise it going to be a three grip just because of the size And so this is an excellent night light weight all purpose just in case knife
2:57
If I was going to recommend one of these three knives for backpackers, this is it
3:01
This is the lightest weight and the most bang for your buck here. I think this one's going to be about $30 to $35 if I'm off the top of my head
3:09
It's about $35 knife. So this is a great little kind of sibling to the 720
3:16
22 Spitfire. This is the third knife I've got to show you
3:21
This is a Kirshaw Scallion. It's got a safety here. So I've got my safety off because it is spring assisted
3:28
Spring assisted can be nice. I don't feel like I need it, but it's kind of cool to have
3:33
It's a lot of fun, right? There are more mechanics. It's a little more complex to clean, more places to fail
3:41
But it is handy, especially for one hand open, one hand closed because it's a liner lock okay um it's really compact it's it's the shortest of the
3:53
three but it's also uh the the medium width you know the spitfire mini is skinnier barely but you can
4:04
definitely feel it in your hand it doesn't look like it's that much skinnier but you can definitely feel it in your hand um but it is the shortest it not the lightest There are more things going on here than this knife This is a simpler knife fewer moving parts much lighter weight
4:24
Also, pocket clip. So we don't have any deep carry clips here out of these three
4:30
But what we do have is a little more versatility in the buck knives. This is one spot for your pocket clip
4:36
There's a lanyard hole. That's kind of handy for hiking because you can loop it onto
4:41
to something. You can put a loop through here, a little lanyard tied off, and then you can
4:46
clip that on a carabiner on your backpack or what have you. So that's kind of nice, but you're
4:52
stuck with whatever this carry configuration is, which is tip down right-hand carry
4:58
As opposed to the Spitfire Mini, which you can switch right-hand, left-hand. Okay, you can take all
5:05
those screws out and switch around. And the Spitfire Full, which you can do the same thing, right-hand or
5:11
left hand, take these screws out, put it in here, or tip up, tip down
5:17
So there are four carry configurations if you're picky about that. I'm not
5:22
So if I have to pick a winner, I'm gonna go with the Spitfire Mini to take on any hike
5:28
This is the most versatile knife for hiking. It works great for backpackers
5:32
So get out there, enjoy the great outdoors, and don't miss out on my perfect pocket knife for camping video because it's totally different
