What's up my friends? It's Simon from LakeUP. I'm out here with a campground
0:05
review of Skid Away Island State Park in Savannah, Georgia. Now, we're going outside
0:11
of comfort zone here. We are not on a lake, full disclosure. We are on a body of
0:17
water. We have a river, we have marsh, and then not very far away we have the
0:21
Atlantic Ocean. This is an awesome, awesome state park. I have been so
0:31
pleasantly surprised. I mean, this has to be the coolest state park I've ever
0:37
stayed in, and I've stayed in state parks coast to coast. Now, this is my first
0:42
time staying on the East Coast, but as of right now I have stayed in state parks
0:47
coast to coast, and this has the nicest facilities with awesome campsites. All of
0:55
them are awesome. All of them have everything you need, and look, it's a, it's
1:02
like a rainforest. It is beautiful. Everywhere you look it's beautiful. There
1:08
are awesome playgrounds. There's all kinds of cool stuff we'll get into. This
1:12
is a fantastic place to camp. I'll tell you why. So first, let's go through the
1:17
numbers. So, Skid Away Island State Park, we're in a really, really cool historical
1:23
area. Really early colonial settlements around here. You know, all the cool things
1:29
really close by. Downtown Savannah is 15 minutes, maybe. We just, we just went to
1:38
the beach. That was about 30 to 35 minutes, and there's all kinds of cool
1:45
you know, hiking and biking and paddling and boating and all kinds of stuff
1:51
around here. So there are 87 campsites here. That is plenty. It's, it's booked up
1:59
this weekend, but it was not, there were plenty of spots when we booked several weeks ago, and, and so I don't feel like this books out all the time
2:09
especially when it's been raining every afternoon. It seems like it's a pretty
2:13
reliable thing. So, you know, people are kind of hunkered down a little bit for
2:18
the little bit in the afternoon. You get out and play in the morning. You get out
2:22
and play in the evening, and right now, I'll turn around, got a little sunset
2:27
behind me through the trees. Some, some kind of mist. All the rain's kind of
2:33
dropping from the, from the leaves still, and it is 72 degrees. It is very humid
2:41
but it is absolutely comfortable, especially from what I've been experiencing across the South. As far as hookups at the sites, it's a mixed bag
2:50
There are not any rural sites that I have seen, so everything has at least
2:55
water and electric at your site. There are sites with full hookups, you know
3:01
maybe, say, a little more than a dozen, maybe 15, something like that. A lot of
3:06
them are pull-throughs for big rigs. Those have sewer right on site and
3:10
everything else, 50 amp service. There is a dump station for you RVers, and if you
3:16
have kids, there are several playgrounds. Also, I have to say, the restrooms are
3:23
absolutely top-notch. They are cool-looking buildings. They're well maintained. You could tell that they're freshly painted, and just a, just a
3:32
really, really, really great experience in the restroom for a state park. I mean, the
3:38
standards, you got to bring down a little bit for state parks, but this one
3:41
this one's up there. Really fantastic. Bravo, state of Georgia. As you can see
3:48
behind me, this is, this is a perfect example of a pad. So you have the, you
3:53
have, like, the kind of gravel, sandy, sandy gravel pull-through. A little
3:59
little U action, so easy in, easy out, off the road. Hookups are on the roadside, and
4:06
so that just makes it, gosh, that's, for pulling a camper in, I mean, it doesn't
4:11
get any easier than that. You don't have to back anything in, and it's already level
4:15
I mean, we just pulled in, checked it, boom, level, good to go. And so setting up was just
4:22
a breeze. I mean, I think we had a record time. It was like 45 minutes. Completely
4:26
completely set up everything, pop-up camper. There's also, all of them have
4:31
this kind of framed-in pad here. This could be, I mean, it could be, you know, a
4:35
tent pad if you wanted to put more people on there. There's some people who have tents on them. You could also do, like, pop-up tent for when it's raining
4:42
or what-have-you. Picnic area, barbecue, grill, whatever. So all the sites have
4:48
this, and then they have this kind of a little bit of open space around them. All of them have that. So sometimes, you know, campgrounds are just a total mixed bag
4:56
depending, depending on what the terrain around here is, but they've done a really good job of clearing out these, these, all these sites. They, they all
5:03
look really fantastic. For the, for scenery, I mean, it is hard to beat this
5:12
There are live oaks with Spanish moss hanging off of them. I mean, huge, huge
5:19
huge, huge, huge ones like this one right behind me. They look so cool. Mixed in
5:23
with, with some southern pines, like that one. Super tall. We've got, I mean, we've
5:32
got, like, magnolia trees, palmettos. Here's some palmettos right here. Just really cool, really cool eclectic mix. Just exactly what you would imagine for
5:45
this area. Exactly what you imagine for this area. And all just completely
5:49
natural and just beautiful. Just, oh my gosh, it is gorgeous. Everywhere we look
5:54
it's gorgeous. There's wildlife, there's, you know, deer kind of moseying through
5:59
the camp. And it's just been a really great experience. If you're a hiker, if
6:06
you're the hiking type, there are lots of trails. They're kind of on, they're on
6:11
the riverside, so they're a little bit in, like, the kind of like the grassy marshland, like overlooking the grassy marshland and the river and whatnot. And
6:18
so, yeah, it's kind of, there's some that are shady and some that aren't, right, so
6:25
prepare for that. I was informed by the staff up front that this park is very
6:31
pet friendly and so pets on leashes and you can go on the trails. There's
6:36
there's a little one mile loop, which is great for little kids, or a little, nice
6:42
little warm-up. And then attached to that, there's, there's what they call an avian
6:46
loop. And so I'm sure there's some pretty good bird-watching out there, I would
6:50
guess, by the name. And then there's another three mile loop, and that has a
6:55
couple of old little historical kind of things. There's like a moonshine still
6:59
and, and like, I think, a gravesite and stuff. So, so if you're feeling a little
7:04
adventurous, want to get, get out there and kind of poke around and learn a little bit about the cool, cool history of the area, then go ahead and do that
7:12
too. Really, really close by, like five minutes away, ten minutes away, is the
7:17
Wormslow State Historic Location with, where you see a postcard from Savannah
7:23
You have that long, straight, long road with all the 300 year old live oaks
7:29
arching over and Spanish moss hanging off, and it just looks amazing, incredible
7:33
awesome. That is very, very close to this state park. It's a different entrance fee
7:41
They didn't let us use our pass, but, you know, a couple bucks, and then you can go
7:45
explore the property, and it was, it's an old colonial site, so there's some, there's
7:50
some ruins from basically, like, little, little residents and kind of a mini fort
7:55
that was built out of, like, mud and clamshells and stuff. It was kind of
7:59
crazy, and a lot of information about the history of the area. A little tiny
8:05
museum you can walk through. All that's really close by and a great place to
8:09
visit. We just did, did it today. That's it for Skid Away Island. Stay tuned for
8:14
more lake reviews and other fun stuff having to do with boating and camping and
8:18
all kinds of fun stuff. I'm Simon from LakeHub, and we will see you outside
