How did anyone ever fish successfully without electronics?? Simon shares an old saltwater saying that will help you zero in on schools of sand bass faster than a fish finder when you're out fishing the lake. Getting on a school of sandies is non-stop action, and tons of fun, especially on light tackle.

Hey everybody, it's Simon from LakeHub. We're out on the lake today and we're talking about schools of fish
0:07
When you're out on the water and you're looking for white bass, sand bass, sandies, whatever you like to call them
0:14
when most of the year they're going to be schooling, right? They're going to be swimming in schools chasing bait
0:21
It's a lot different than crappie who might be kind of, sort of schooled, but they're usually going to be kind of hanging out and suspended in some structure
0:29
It's going to be a lot different than largemouth that are often going to be hanging out in some structure waiting for an ambush
0:35
You need to find the schools. They're not going to be spread out like other types of fish all over the lake
0:41
So how do you find them? You can use your electronics. You can use your eyeballs
0:47
Using electronics, of course, you know what to look for if you're used to that. If you do a lot of largemouth fishing, you're probably dependent on that
0:53
But I'm telling you, you're going to get into some sandies even quicker if you use your eyes and a little bit of saltwater knowledge that birds equal bait and bait equals bass
1:05
So if you see birds circling, you see birds dive in the water, then you know that there's a bait ball
1:11
There's going to be minnows. There's going to be shad or whatever the local fair is at your local lake
1:17
And there's going to be underneath that bait ball and around that bait ball
1:21
There's going to be some kind of fish chasing those bait. If you have striper, there's going to be striper. If you have white bass, sandies, then there's going to be sandies
1:30
And so you know that that's the spot. You don't even need to use your electronics
1:35
You just need to keep your eyes on the skies. Right. And so what you want to do is when you get up to that, when you want to get it, get up to that bait. Right
1:43
You don't want to bust right on through. You don't want to break it up. You don't want to touch the action
1:48
You want to get within casting distance of the outside and just drift. All right
1:52
So you don't even want to get up to the action. You want to be able to cast into it from the outside
1:57
You want to be able to get in, cast into a little bit into it. Right. You want to be able to get your, you know, your lure through the action
2:04
But you'll be able to see when you get close, you'll be able to see where the fish are busting the top, where the birds are diving
2:09
You may even be able to see the bait fish. Might be some, you know, kind of chopped up activity on the top of just fish chasing fish all over the place
2:17
It's a total blast. It's a total blast when you get into a school of sand bass on the top water
2:23
Once you find them, you know, so use your eyes, find them. And then once you get there, I mean, you could use live bait, but it's a ton of fun to use artificials on light tackle
2:34
You know, six pound test like crappie rod, swim baits, spoons, cast masters, road runners, anything with a little flash, anything that looks like a bait fish
2:47
That's what you want to be thrown in there. Crank baits like middle crank baits
2:51
That's the kind of stuff you want to be thrown in the middle and speed retrieve
2:55
I mean, it's like it's like a feeding frenzy. Right. So you want to get in there and speed retrieve. Try it just under the surface, right back towards you
3:05
If that doesn't work, let it drop a little bit, a little more depth, more or less speed, stop and go, mix it up
3:12
But usually once you find the fish, I mean, it's it is just hookup after hookup
3:17
If you've got a if you've got a two bait rig, if you know how to tie that, do that, throw two jigs at a time, you'll be catching them two at a time
3:27
It's crazy. It's a lot of fun. So so that's it, man
3:31
You just use your electronics if that's what you're used to. But I'm telling you, use your eyeballs. You keep your eyes on the skies
3:38
And just as you cruise around fishing the lake, always be looking, looking all the way across the lake
3:45
Find those birds, those birds. They will lead you to sand bass
3:50
Get out there and have a good time. Now, if you like sand bass fishing
3:54
I don't want you to miss out on my essential creek fishing gear video for the spring spawn because that's a ton of fun, too
4:03
But hey, on the open water, that's a totally different experience. But if you like that, don't miss out on that video. Get out on the water
4:09
Keep your eyes on the skies and we'll catch you next time
