Lake Texoma Water Level - It's Shrinking Again

Today is Sunday, January 5, 2014 and we just returned from a two-hour tour of the West End of Lake Texoma. We had to drive our 4 X 4 pickup because there is no way we could have toured by boat, not even our small boat. There's not enough water in the lake for safe travel here. The water level as reported on this website is 609.49, and that is historically low. My husband has worked on this lake for nearly 20 years and he has never seen so much "real estate" along the shore of Texas and also Oklahoma. So he wanted me to take photos for the world to see what's happening here. Basically, it's not good. We had a long discussion while we were driving, on topics ranging from global warming to the politics of power generation on the Denison Dam and selling of water to municipalities north of Dallas. We saw hundreds of tree stumps sticking out of bare sand where water is normally deep enough for boats to travel safely over them. We saw boats in private slips starting to lean and boat ramps closed for safety reasons. I'm assuming that everyone who knows and loves Lake Texoma has opinions and this would be a good time to share them below, because we need the politicians and government officials to see what's happening here. No rain is in the forecast for the next week. That means the lake level will continue to drop. Lack of rain is certainly one reason for the incredible shrinking Lake Texoma. But it is not the only reason. Care to share your own comments now?

Fishing Report from TPWD (Apr. 30)

FAIR. Water stained; 62 degrees; 3.54 feet below pool. The striper fishing is great with the rise in water levels and surface temperatures. The shad spawn is in full force, look for fish shallow along rocky banks on Topwaters and swimbaits. Look for birds on the banks and surface activity. Crappie are still scattered and in spawning stages. Fish are suspended under docks and near the top of brush. Jigs and small shad are working in 12-15 feet of water near creeks and coves. Catfish are showing up along the rocks and shallow flats. Cut shad or prepared baits in 5-12 feet of water near points and drop-offs. Bass are at the backs of coves and for suspended fish near docks. The shad spawn and rise in lake levels will pull fish on to the banks as well. Report by Jacob Orr, Lake Texoma, Guaranteed Guide Service. The lake is up several feet and there is lots of mud and floating debris, so navigate with caution. Striped bass are good along mudlines, flats and under the birds with swimbaits. Report by John Blasingame, Adventure Texoma Outdoors.
