That Dam Lake Texoma 5K Bi-State Run

The 4th Annual That Dam Lake Texoma 5K Bi-State Run benefiting the Pottsboro Kids Club will be on November 7, 2015. This one of a kind 5K race begins at 9 am. Normally the Dam is closed to pedestrian traffic, but on race day, hundreds will be running across the Denison Dam between two states. It offers fantastic views of the lake, river, power plant and surrounding areas. The long range forecast predicts a perfect fall day with sunshine and a high of 72.

Many runners want their run chip timed and are looking for a medal or the coveted Best Of Trophy for the top man and top lady of the 5K! This is a flat course and more than likely in November the winds will be at your back. The last leg of the 5K is all downhill. It should allow for some really fast times.

This is a family event, so if you aren’t up to running, you can walk the 5k, and you can also walk with your toddler in a stroller or your dog. It will be a great day just to be outdoors, get some healthy exercise and just have fun. It’s all about the kids.

Registration and race finish are at Boat Launch Park at Texas Hwy 91 and FM 1310. Since Hwy 91 is still closed, you will need to come in from the Oklahoma side and park at the East Burns Run Recreational Area on the Oklahoma side of Lake Texoma. Buses will be available to take participants to the starting area. Be sure to arrive early so you will be at the starting point for the race to begin at 9 am. Parking is limited at the race start area, but if you should park there, buses will be available to take you back to retrieve your car after the race.

Registration is $25/person during pre-registration, $35/person the day of the race. Groups and students have discounted rates. Students are $15/person and groups of 10-39 are $20/person or groups of 40+ are $15/person. Groups must be registered by 10/28/15 to receive theirs shirts at the race. Day of the race registration begins at 7:30 am. Pottsboro Kids Club provides a safe, low cost after school alternative for kids who would otherwise be home alone after school. Children receive a snack, help with homework and they participate in a variety of indoor and outdoor games. Activities are designed to challenge the kids both physically and mentally. Extended hours are offered on school days off and during the summer months. Creative and special trainings over various topics are incorporated during this time. Gardening, sewing, rock collecting and computer skills are just some of those topics.

The Pottsboro Kids Club also offers Volunteer Opportunities. Junior and Senior high school students are encouraged to volunteer to tutor and mentor the younger students. Adult volunteers to help with homework and to interact with kids is always an opportunity for those who can spare some time in the afternoon. Anyone with special skills or hobbies are encouraged to contact the PKC to volunteer to help train kids in various areas of life.

For more information about enrollment or volunteer opportunities, please call Judy Nolen, Club Director, at (903)786-5834. The Pottsboro Kids Club is a 501 (C) 3 organization located in Pottsboro Texas. That Dam Lake Texoma 5K Bi-State Run is their biggest fundraiser for the year.

Fishing Report from TPWD (May 1)

GOOD. Water normal stain; 67 degrees; 0.33 feet below pool. Striped bass fishing is great on top waters early along rocky shorelines and sandy flats around coves. Watch for birds on the banks and fish the direction the birds are moving up and down the rocks. Live bait is still very effective fishing ledges and humps near the river channels in 35-45 feet of water. The shad spawn is on and catching will only get better. Crappie fishing is good near boat docks and on structure also using electronics to locate roaming fish in 12-15 feet of water. Glo and milk are colors of choice with a crappie nibble tip. Seeing females in the creeks 2-5 feet of water as well. Catfishing is getting better on cut shad and prepared baits anchored on ledges in 40-50 feet of water a few reels off the bottom near rocky banks. Slip cork with a cut shad down the bluffs are producing channel cats preparing to spawn as well. Bass fishing is good using top waters early, spooks or closed face glide baits and fish crawl baits later. Fish are roaming near the beds and hitting white chatter baits as well. Live shad down the bluffs are producing numbers with the occasional big fish off the rocks in 5-8 feet of water. Report by Jacob Orr, Guaranteed Guide Service Lake Texoma. Hybrid stripers are excellent with limits coming on topwaters along the bank early in the morning watching for Egrets. Then switch to swimbaits on flats and points in 10-20 feet of water. Shad are spawning along the banks. Report by John Blasingame, Adventure Texoma Outdoors.
