Living the Dream: Retire to Texoma

Small town charm, low median housing prices and abundant amenities are reasons to consider Texomaland as your retirement destination. AARP Magazine noticed in its October/November issue. Check it out here: http://www.aarp.org/home-family/your-home/info-09-2013/best-places-to-retire-social-security.5.html Lake Texoma's appealing location is just a bonus. Located a mere hour north of Dallas and two and a half hours south of Oklahoma City, Lake Texoma is central to a plethora of sporting events, opera's, ballet, museums and some of the best golfing anywhere. The area surrounding Lake Texoma consists of 20 towns on the Oklahoma side of the lake and 23 Texas towns along the Red River Valley in what locals refer to as Texomaland. Each of these towns has a rich history and some darn good eating establishments; both worth delving into. Wine connoisseurs will be delighted to discover some excellent wines in the recently established Texoma American Viticulture Area of North Central Texas covering over two million acres of sandy loam on the south side of the lake and Red River. The Munson Wine Trail should be added to your list of day trips, hosting 12 of the best Texas wineries reaching from Allen, TX north to the Red River, west to Gainsville, TX and back east to Paris, TX. Flight enthusiasts won't be let down by watching pilots compete for national and world champion titles in the World Aerobatic Championships hosted by the North Texas Regional Airport. Visit the Perrin Air Force Base Historical Museum while you are there. The museum has done a great job preserving 30 years of history while the base operated as an active military installation from 1941 until closing in 1971. If the excitement of a casino really gets your blood pumping you will be thrilled to know the Choctaw Resort and Casino is minutes away. It is a complete environment offering shows, restaurants, nightlife, a tower hotel with a spa, and of course, gambling. Top notch medical care at Texoma Medical Center and low cost public transportation provided by TAPS Public Transit are even more reasons to call Texomaland your retirement home.

Fishing Report from TPWD (Jul. 9)

FAIR. Water stained; 84 degrees; 1.87 feet above pool. Striped bass fishing is hit and miss but fish are starting to surface on shallow sand flats and in cuts. Top waters and swimbaits are working as well as live bait drifting shallow 10-15 feet of water or anchoring on main lake ledges in 15-25 feet of water. Catfishing remains excellent on punch bait in 25-30 feet of water on humps and main lake points. Bigger blues will be cruising the deeper water drift while gizzard shad or rough fish off of the river channels on flats in 40-55 feet of water. Bass fishing is good on hard baits and reaction baits near docks and the backs of coves early in the mornings and late evenings. Fish main lake points and rock bluffs mid day off the banks. Report by Jacob Orr, Lake Texoma, Guaranteed Guide Service. Striped bass are good on topwaters in shallow water, switching to slabs as fish move out to 15 feet of water. Water clarity is improved. Report by John Blasingame, Adventure Texoma Outdoors.
