A time honored tradition - the start of dove season

Probably the biggest Texas hunting tradition is opening day of dove season. There are even some schools in Texas that won't start school until after the first weekend of dove season. J.J. Kent of Kent Outdoors claims his guides and everyone connected with Kent have been dove hunters "ever since we could hold a BB gun." This year opening day is Sept. 1. Kent outdoors has prime dove fields located in the Nocona area. Some have sunflowers, others with wheat. Ponds and mesquite thickets are around the fields for the birds to eat, drink and roost. "Should provide some great shooting," says J.J. Hunters who also like to fish have Blast and Cast packages. Kent Outdoors has teamed up with Bill Carey at Stripper Express (www.striperexpress.com) for some great hunting and fishing all in the same day. Hunt dove in the morning, grab a bite to eat, and then go out and catch stripers in the afternoon and evening. Just when you think it can't get any better, teal season begins Sept. 14. Teal daily bag limit this year has been increased to six. USFWS says there's lots of birds coming this way. "We have water this year," exclaims Kent. "Conditions are outstanding for this upcoming season. We did really well last year on teal and this year looks to be even better." Kent Outdoors manages four different wetlands. J.J and his six employees are now out planting millet, milo and other seeds; checking the blinds and the different hunting locations, making sure everything is go for the start of teal season. J.J. says there are other guides around Lake Texoma but nobody can offer what he and his crew can do. "We have eight or nine welded custom made blinds, costing roughly $3,000 each on skids that we place on prime spots. We pull right up to the blind. A hunter walks 10 feet to the blind, sits down on a bench and there's a shelf in front of him for coffee and shotgun shells, a holder for your gun, and a strap to put your birds on. There is nothing difficult about the hunt - a first class deal." Every year Kent Outdoors books hunts, many repeat, with clients from all over the U.S., some even from Norway, Canada and Mexico. "We go wherever the birds are. All possible scenarios are covered, marshes, ponds, river, Lake Texoma. A lot of guys who call themselves guides, all they have is a boat and they go out on the Lake. If the birds aren't on the Lake, well...you just watch the sunrise and swat mosquitoes." Kent Outdoors has worked out accommodation packages with several motels in the Nocona and Pottsboro areas. Kent Outdoors is working with the Choctaw Casino in Durant to set up packages for Kent Outdoor hunters. Fishing Report from TPWD (Jul. 9)

FAIR. Water stained; 84 degrees; 1.87 feet above pool. Striped bass fishing is hit and miss but fish are starting to surface on shallow sand flats and in cuts. Top waters and swimbaits are working as well as live bait drifting shallow 10-15 feet of water or anchoring on main lake ledges in 15-25 feet of water. Catfishing remains excellent on punch bait in 25-30 feet of water on humps and main lake points. Bigger blues will be cruising the deeper water drift while gizzard shad or rough fish off of the river channels on flats in 40-55 feet of water. Bass fishing is good on hard baits and reaction baits near docks and the backs of coves early in the mornings and late evenings. Fish main lake points and rock bluffs mid day off the banks. Report by Jacob Orr, Lake Texoma, Guaranteed Guide Service. Striped bass are good on topwaters in shallow water, switching to slabs as fish move out to 15 feet of water. Water clarity is improved. Report by John Blasingame, Adventure Texoma Outdoors.
