Texomaland Veteran's Day Events and Services

Veteran’s Day falls on Friday, November 11, 2022, this year, so November is a big month honoring our military service members in Texomaland. Veteran’s Day is a public holiday held on the anniversary of the end of World War I, November 11, 1918, to honor U.S. veterans and victims of all wars.

Veteran’s Day is celebrated on or around November 11 annually. On Veteran’s Day, our nation comes together to remember and honor the service and sacrifices of our Veterans. Veteran’s Day means many things to many people. Veteran’s Day was first observed in 1919 on the first anniversary of the 1918 Armistice that ended World War I and was called Armistice Day.

Veteran’s Day was commemorated in 1921 with the burial of an unknown soldier from World War I at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia. In 1938, November 11 became an official national holiday in the United States to honor veterans. To honor those who had served in all U.S. wars, its name was officially changed to Veterans Day in 1954. Other countries followed suit with holidays honoring their veterans.

Britain, Canada, Australia, and France observe November 11 in honor of the veterans of World Wars I and II. The second Sunday of November is Remembrance Sunday in the United Kingdom. Canada observes November 11 as Remembrance Day. It is common to have two minutes of silence at 11:00 AM on November 11, In Britain and the Commonwealth and in countries of Europe, the time and date of the World War I Armistice in 1918.

It seems like there are fewer Texomaland Veteran’s Day events this year than in previous years. It is hard to believe that the pandemic affected Veteran’s Day in Oklahoma and Texas in 2022. I have included a few other Veteran’s activities.  If you know of a Veteran’s Day event in Texomaland that I have missed, please email me at [email protected].

Fishing Report from TPWD (Oct. 9)

GOOD. Water stained; 75 degrees; 1.74 feet below pool. Striper fishing is excellent on live shad. Look at ledges and flats in 25-40 feet of water for schools of fish roaming. A fluorocarbon leader is a must, and downsize with the clearer water. Start watching for fog in the backs of coves and topwaters along those banks for bigger fish. Crappie are still slower, with fish remaining inactive due to the warmer temps. Focus on brush and structure near coves and main lake points in 12-20 feet of water. Bass are fair on shallow-water crankbaits and A-rigs along the bluffs early, and near docks late. Expect fish to start moving up near docks and creeks. Catfishing is great, with blues still being found on flats and ledges in 30-50 feet of water, and channels on humps in 15-25 feet of water on prepared baits. Start checking deep flats 40-50 feet of water for big fish, as the thermocline goes away and lake turnover ends. Report by Jacob Orr, Lake Guaranteed Guide Service. Fishing patterns are holding steady and the lake is turning over creating tough fishing conditions. Stripers are fair on the flats in 30 feet of water or deeper with live bait. The artificial bite is slow. Very little surface action for a topwater bite. Report by John Blasingame, Adventure Texoma Outdoors.
