Lake Texoma – where big stripers are caught

With the Red and Washita rivers feeding it, Lake Texoma is one of the top freshwater striped bass fisheries in the nation. Although it supports excellent populations of other bass and catfish, the lake is legendary for its stripers. "Lake Texoma is so special, it has its very own fishing license available from both sides of the lake," says Lake Texoma State Park manager Richard Keithley. "Not only can you fish it with a Texas or Oklahoma permit, you can also buy a Lake Texoma permit." Lake Texoma State Park is proud to be the home of the Texoma Striper Guide Association at Catfish Bay Marina. Members include Richard Price from Price's Guide Service, James Allen from Blue Water Striper Guide Service, Ray Farrior from Snowgoose Striper Guide Service, and Gary and Terry Scarberry from Scarberry's Striper Guide Service. The park highly recommends these fishing guides, as they all have years of experience helping visitors catch fish. These guide services are available year round. There's no shortage of marinas, boat ramps and lakeside amenities. The marina is a full service marina with a convenience store and a fuel dock. Lake Texoma State Park offers both tent and RV camping (with restrooms and showers), as well as hiking trails and a nature center. The Park offers swimming, camping, picnic areas and wildlife viewing opportunities. Picnic tables and fire rings are available in day-use areas but are on a first come, first serve basis. Lake Texoma State Park's overnight facilities include tent camping and two RV areas. Approximately 88 full hookup RV sites, 41 RV sites with water, electric (30 and 50 amp) and 200 tent sites are available. The on-site Rally Campground offers an open grass area with 16 electric clusters accommodating up to four units each with 30 amp electric and water service. Lake Texoma State Park has no day-use fees. Canoe, paddleboat and pontoon rentals are available. Whether you fish, camp or water ski, a fun time is guaranteed when you visit Lake Texoma. More information can be obtained at Lake Texoma State Park, 11500 Park Office Rd, Kingston, OK 73439. The phone number is 580-564-2566. Fishing Report from TPWD (Jun. 25)

FAIR. Water stained; 74 degrees; 5.41 feet above pool. Striper fishing is hit-and-miss with so much outflow but fish are consistent in shallower water 15-25 feet on live shad. Also seeing fish on humps and ledges in deeper water 40-55 feet of water on live shad. Be on the lookout for topwater action as bait moves off the banks and into deeper water with the warming temps. The bite will bust loose once they shut the flood gates and we are at normal pool level. Catfishing is good for blues on cut shad in 40-55 feet of water and channels are still along the rocks in 25-30 feet of water on punch bait. Bigger blues fish near the rivers with cut rough fish/gizzard shad drifting or anchored in 15-25 feet of water. Largemouth and smallmouth are improving with the lake conditions and water clarity. Watch for things to clear up quickly in the coves and creeks especially when they slow the outflow. Smallmouth will be on the boulders and rocks off the banks in 8-15 feet of water. Largemouth will shade and suspend in the clearer water under docks and marinas. Report by Jacob Orr, Lake Texoma, Guaranteed Guide Service. The water is dropping nearly 9 inches a day, and should be normal around Independence Day. Striped bass hit-and-missing with live bait in 20-30 feet of water. The small threadfin shad should start to run midlake and when this happens the topwater bite should be good. Report by John Blasingame, Adventure Texoma Outdoors.
