Grayson County Highway Construction Projects

Grayson County is growing big. The entire U.S. saw a significant outflow of people with earning potential from major cities between 2020 and 2021. In April 2022, the Texoma Council of Governments (TCOG) published its 2022-2027 Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy.

TCOG covers Cooke, Fannin, and Grayson Counties. It reported that Cooke County grew in population by 2,785 (7.2%), Grayson by 15,335 (12.7%), and Fannin by 19,719 (4.7%) between the 2010 and 2020 censuses.

The Texas State Water Development Board predicted that by 2030, the population growth will increase by 9.4% in Cooke, 8.7% in Grayson, and 22.7% in Fannin Counties. Residents of and people who travel through Sherman/Denison have been mired in highway construction nightmares going on for its fourth year around the US 75/82 junction.

Almost every major and minor thoroughfare crisscrossing Grayson County has construction underway or beginning soon, beginning in four years, or beginning in five to ten years, according to the Texas Department of Transportation.

These highways and their improvement projects connect Bells, Collinsville, Denison, Dorchester, Gordonville, Gunter, Howe, Knollwood, Luella, Pottsboro, Preston, Sadler, Sherman, Southmayd, Tioga, Tom Bean, Van Alstyne, and Whitesboro. The Sherman/Denison area is witnessing major business and housing developments moving in.

Grayson County is experiencing and will experience continued growing pains in the way of traffic management for quite some time. In March 2023, Governor Greg Abbott announced an $85 billion project spread across a decade to construct roads across the state.

Fishing Report from TPWD (Feb. 5)

FAIR. Water stained; 48 degrees; 1.71 feet below pool. Striper fishing has slowed down with the water levels dropping and the extreme change in weather. Look at humps, ledges, and structure in 15-30 feet of water, as well as deep water on ledges and river channels in 55–65 feet of water, using flukes while drifting to cover water. Look for bigger fish to move up into coves and shallow water, chasing big gizzard shad throughout the day. Crappie are on brush and structure in 18–25 feet of water, but target shallower water on warmer days as fish start to move toward creeks and coves on the lake. To target bass, focus on rocks and structures that hold baitfish in warmer water. Use a slow presentation, covering different depths off drop-offs and ledges in 8–15 feet of water. Catfishing is picking up. Look for big blues in shallow water near river inlets, especially with the recent rains and big gizzard shad pulling into the muddy, warmer water. Anchor fish with gizzard shad and cut heads off the bottom in 5–15 feet of water. In creek channels off flats, drift fish in 20–30 feet of water. .Report by Jacob Orr, Lake Guaranteed Guide Service. Striped bass are excellent on structure in 10-25 feet of water with Alabama rigs and swimbaits. Some fish can be caught deadsticking. There is no bird action. Report by John Blasingame, Adventure Texoma Outdoors.
