Texoma Kite Festival to be held at new Pottsboro park

The Pottsboro Library and City of Pottsboro are hosting the Texoma Kite Festival on Saturday, October 18, 2014 from 11 am to 4 pm at the James G. Thompson Park in Pottsboro.

In addition to stunt kites, public kite flying, multi-rotors (drones), street art and a candy drop, the Dallas Area Kiteflier Organization will be on hand with kites of behemoth proportions that require multiple people to fly. The event is free and open to the public. Food vendors and concessions will be available throughout the day.

The Denison Animal Welfare Group will be exhibiting adoptable dogs from the Denison Animal Shelter from 11 am until 4 pm. Many breeds and sizes are available. The adoption fee of $75.00 includes vaccination for Rabies and spay or neuter surgery by the Animal Hospital of Denison.

Funding for the event is through the Outside the Box grant the library recently received. The City of Pottsboro and the Pottsboro Area Library hope the festival will help them gain recognition for the new park.

Located west of FM 996 just south of the railroad tracks the 28 acre James G. Thompson Park opened to the public in September 2012. The newest of the three Pottsboro parks, this 28 acre multi-use facility offers a wide variety of outdoor activities which include three soccer fields, two ball fields, fishing pond, walking trail, basketball court, playground area, gazebo, two picnic shelters, and improvements are still being made today.

Fishing Report from TPWD (Jun. 11)

FAIR. Water stained; 74 degrees; 10.38 feet above pool. Striper fishing is improving as the lake settles and fish move up in the water column. Fish are suspended in deep water and on shallow humps 15-25 feet of water. Live bait and lures are working on the right day in the right school of fish. Channel catfish are great along rocky banks using punch bait on baited holes in 10-20 feet of water. Blue catfish are in deeper water on dead shad or cut bait suspended above the muddy water near the bottom. Bass fishing will improve as the lake clears up and the fish move to summer patterns with warmer water. Fish flooded brush in the backs of the creeks and near points. Docks and marinas near the south end of the lake will have less murky water. Report by Jacob Orr, Lake Texoma, Guaranteed Guide Service. Striped bass bite is improving on live bait, with some small fish being caught on artificials in 10-30 feet of water. The fishing improves along with the clarity. A few fish are schooling. Report by John Blasingame, Adventure Texoma Outdoors.
