Sherman Autumn and Arts Festival




Fall is in the air and one of the best ways to enjoy the warm days and cool evenings is to visit a Texoma area festival. The Sherman Chamber of Commerce will host the Sherman Autumn and Arts Festival on Saturday September 20, 2014.

Held on the Municipal Grounds at 405 N. Rusk Street in Sherman, the outdoor festival will feature Arts & Crafts booths, Painted Pumpkins, Youth Art show, a local artist Art Show and Sale, live performances by local bands during the afternoon and an Erik Dylan concert in the evening. The Food Court will be brimming with wonderful fair food.

The Texoma Woodcarvers Guild will host its 2014 show and sale in conjunction with the Sherman Autumn and Arts Fest. All carvings in the competition will be on display in the Municipal Ballroom. The Texoma Woodcarvers Guild 2014 Nativity Scene will be on display in the foyer of the Sherman Public Library. The pieces are carved of Butternut and for the ninth year each member of the group has contributed one carved piece to the project, now numbering seventeen figures.

SER RUN and the COLOR-K Fun Run
Benefiting the Sherman Education Foundation, the SEF Autumn & Arts Fest Run 5K/10K Run will be followed by the COLOR-K Fun Run! The COLOR-K Fun Run begins at 9 AM and is a one-mile, totally fun activity designed to involve family and friends in a colorful leisurely event. Participants should plan to wear as much white as possible because throughout the course, you will be showered with waves of color, transforming you into a tie-dyed work of art. The colorful cornstarch (aka pixie dust) used during the event is 100% non-toxic and completely biodegradable. Entry fees for the 5k|10k also includes admission to the COLOR-K Fun Run.

Teddy Bear Parade
Youngsters can dress up their favorite Teddy Bear for the Teddy Bear parade. Youngsters need to have their Teddy Bear Registered by 8 AM. Judging will take place at 8:30 AM and the parade will begin at 9:15 AM.

Kids Alley
The Kids Alley has other exciting events going on throughout the day - a Woodcarvers Demonstration from 10 AM - noon, Dance Class at 1 PM, Flash Mob at 3 PM and Lil Katy Train Rides throughout the day. The Sherman Museum will be running the movie, “Walking with the Dinosaurs” in 3D at 10 AM, 12 noon and 2 PM. Dino craft activities for kids follow the movie.

Performances
The children’s theater group, Theatricks, will present an excerpt from “The Secret Garden” at the Honey McGee Playhouse at 2 PM and again at 7 PM. The Sherman Community Players will present “Wyatt Earp: Life on the Frontier” at the Finley Theater at 7 PM, featuring Wyatt Earp, a decedent of the famous lawman, as Wyatt Earp. The Story Hollywood Didn’t Tell! Set in the mid-1920, an elderly Wyatt Earp tells of his adventures during the final days of the American Frontier from Arizona to Alaska.  This one man play has recieved aclaim from all over the world.

At the Hot 107.3 FM Gazebo, the SHS Band will start the music and entertainment rolling at 9 AM, followed by the SISD Choir and SISD Orchestra. Jill Brown Studios will take the stage at 10:30 AM followed by Austin College Improv and No Limits. The Texoma Chordringers perform at 1:00 PM.

Live performances by local bands begins at 1:30 PM, with Rocky & Stinks starting things off, Classic Recall at 3:15, James Dering at 5:15 and Annalisa Nutt at 6:30 PM. The Erik Dyland concert begins at 7:45 and ends at 9:00 PM.

Exhibition Stage
The Exhibition Stage will have live performances going on all day with the Nautilus-Silver Sneakers starting things off at 9:30 AM. Performances by the SHS Drill Team, Nautilus, Tae Kwon Do, Tai Chi, SHS cheerleaders, Cannonball Cloggers, Dance Explosion, SHS Drill Team and Premier Martial Arts will round out the day.

Fishing Report from TPWD (May 1)

GOOD. Water normal stain; 67 degrees; 0.33 feet below pool. Striped bass fishing is great on top waters early along rocky shorelines and sandy flats around coves. Watch for birds on the banks and fish the direction the birds are moving up and down the rocks. Live bait is still very effective fishing ledges and humps near the river channels in 35-45 feet of water. The shad spawn is on and catching will only get better. Crappie fishing is good near boat docks and on structure also using electronics to locate roaming fish in 12-15 feet of water. Glo and milk are colors of choice with a crappie nibble tip. Seeing females in the creeks 2-5 feet of water as well. Catfishing is getting better on cut shad and prepared baits anchored on ledges in 40-50 feet of water a few reels off the bottom near rocky banks. Slip cork with a cut shad down the bluffs are producing channel cats preparing to spawn as well. Bass fishing is good using top waters early, spooks or closed face glide baits and fish crawl baits later. Fish are roaming near the beds and hitting white chatter baits as well. Live shad down the bluffs are producing numbers with the occasional big fish off the rocks in 5-8 feet of water. Report by Jacob Orr, Guaranteed Guide Service Lake Texoma. Hybrid stripers are excellent with limits coming on topwaters along the bank early in the morning watching for Egrets. Then switch to swimbaits on flats and points in 10-20 feet of water.
