Family Friendly Weekend Retreats

The days of weekend binge drinking and wild parties are a distant memory now. These days your priorities are different. You have a family to think of now. You have settled into a more responsible, and civilized lifestyle, but still love the lure of the lake. You might be interested to know about some of the best spots on the lake to take the kids this weekend.
The west end of Lake Texoma is calmer; less congested, and has spectacular scenery, making it a go-to spot for family fun. This end of the lake also contains some of the best marinas and vacation spots for families.
Flowing Wells Resort
Located on the east side of the Big Mineral arm of the lake, Flowing Wells Resort offers clean, well-kept camp grounds or charming rustic cabins to make your base camp. The courteous and helpful employees go out of their way to make sure your stay is full of happy memories. One thing you will not find at this marina is a party animal. The staff responds quickly to quiet down any situation before it gets too lively.
You and the kids will find plenty to do. Hike, bike, or just get lost on the 200 acre resort. If that is not enough room you can meander next door to Hagerman Wildlife Refuge. Turn those frowns upside down exploring on your own or let the kids participate in one of the nature programs offered the first Saturday of each month. The program is suitable for children 4-7 or 8-12 years old, is free, and covers a variety of topics.
Cedar Bayou Marina
If you are looking for a budget friendly getaway spot, Cedar Bayou has a lot to offer. Each one of their 8 cabins or 4 hotel rooms is fully furnished. All you have to do is bring the food. Amenities offered with each room or cabin includes a covered fishing dock, complimentary boat slip, and newly purchased gas barbeque grills.
Let one of the employees direct you to the playground or rent you one of their pontoon boats, a canoe, or a kayak to enjoy the calm, scenic cove the marina is nestled in.
One of the best features of this peaceful marina is the hiking trail. Spend a day or two hiking 14 winding miles of Cross Timbers Hiking Trail.
Pack up the mini-van this weekend and head to Lake Texoma for a family friendly retreat.

Fishing Report from TPWD (May 1)

GOOD. Water normal stain; 67 degrees; 0.33 feet below pool. Striped bass fishing is great on top waters early along rocky shorelines and sandy flats around coves. Watch for birds on the banks and fish the direction the birds are moving up and down the rocks. Live bait is still very effective fishing ledges and humps near the river channels in 35-45 feet of water. The shad spawn is on and catching will only get better. Crappie fishing is good near boat docks and on structure also using electronics to locate roaming fish in 12-15 feet of water. Glo and milk are colors of choice with a crappie nibble tip. Seeing females in the creeks 2-5 feet of water as well. Catfishing is getting better on cut shad and prepared baits anchored on ledges in 40-50 feet of water a few reels off the bottom near rocky banks. Slip cork with a cut shad down the bluffs are producing channel cats preparing to spawn as well. Bass fishing is good using top waters early, spooks or closed face glide baits and fish crawl baits later. Fish are roaming near the beds and hitting white chatter baits as well. Live shad down the bluffs are producing numbers with the occasional big fish off the rocks in 5-8 feet of water. Report by Jacob Orr, Guaranteed Guide Service Lake Texoma. Hybrid stripers are excellent with limits coming on topwaters along the bank early in the morning watching for Egrets. Then switch to swimbaits on flats and points in 10-20 feet of water. Shad are spawning along the banks. Report by John Blasingame, Adventure Texoma Outdoors.
