What's up everybody it's Simon from LikeUp. Today we're going to be talking about how to fix
0:05
your canvas awning bag. Now my bag is not actually made out of canvas. It looks like canvas but it's
0:12
actually kind of a tarp material. I'm starting to fray. I'm starting to peel and you can see
0:16
what I did here. I used a grommet. Now I had seen this from a camper that I was actually looking at
0:25
buying. The owner had done this and I thought it was a really smart idea. Now when I had looked at
0:31
repairing what was happening on the other end there is that the zipper was pulling apart. That's
0:37
a really common problem. That's a really common problem with any camper not just my little you
0:42
know pop-up gal here. But any camper you just over time use wear and tear exposure you know
0:54
UV and so on and so forth and these threads are going to start to fail. They're going to start to
0:58
pull apart. In fact you can kind of see it right here. I don't know if you can or not but you can
1:02
kind of see I was starting to pull apart right here and I was starting to create a couple problems
1:08
One I mean the other side had ripped clear down to here and it's just a matter of time before it
1:14
keeps going and then we have real problems because this awning is pretty heavy. So the bag does a
1:20
good job of keeping in there. If it's open and exposed and bouncing around on the highway catching
1:25
wind that's a big problem. Problem number two that I happened to solve in the process is that there's
1:33
no set screw on this rail right here. On my last pop-up camper there was a set screw that went
1:38
into the end on each end and it kept this thing in here from sliding back and forth. You can see
1:44
that I tied it off. So that actually solved two of my problems in one. So a lot of the other videos
1:52
that I saw were suggestions to get an awl which is basically like a hand needle with a handle
1:59
You know leather workers use them for like pushing needles through leather. That's a great solution
2:05
if you have a problem like this right here where it's not that big. You have maybe an inch, inch
2:13
and a half and you need to push a needle through this heavy duty material. Okay if that's all you
2:21
need to do then that actually works pretty well. Less than 10 bucks and you're done. You know a
2:26
little bit a little bit of elbow grease and you're done. Now if you have the problem that I have where
2:32
your material is actually starting to decay a little bit I don't trust that. I don't trust
2:37
sewing that back together. I think it's just going to fail in a different way next time. And so when
2:43
I saw the grommet option I thought that is the way I have to go. So I looked into it. I got a kit
2:51
I'll put a link down below for the kit but also less than 10 bucks and way easier than I thought
2:58
it was. Grommets have always been kind of a mystery to me. You know how everything's a mystery until
3:02
you learn how it works. You know what I mean. So it's really simple. All you do is there's two pieces
3:11
There's a back and a front and the back has like a little part that goes through. So first step I
3:17
used wood blocks but it came with like a little backing thing if you want to use that for a bunch
3:21
I just use wood and it comes with the hole punch. You punch a hole through both layers
3:26
You put the backing one through with the neck. You put the top one on and then there's an anvil
3:32
and the anvil basically you hammer them together. I used a sledgehammer like a four pound sledge
3:39
Gave it a couple good wraps on it just to be sure and basically it like flares out that tube and
3:45
man these things are sealed tight. Sealed tight. So that also created this loop. I used some 550
3:53
paracord which is super handy stuff to have around. I've got that stuff in every vehicle
3:59
It can be a tourniquet and a pinch. Really comes in handy for camping. A little short little length
4:05
like this can tie a bunch of fishing rods together so you're not like juggling all your fishing rods
4:09
and getting all tangled up and stuff. Paracord is super handy. In fact you know what I'll put a link
4:15
to that down below too. So I just cut me a little length put it on my a little latch here. Did the
4:22
same thing on the other side. Now it holds it tight on the road. I'm so happy. We were always worried
4:27
about this thing sliding too far. It would slide. I mean it would slide off like that on one side or
4:32
slide off on the other side if we break too hard or something like that. So this has been
4:38
my solution. Super handy. Love it. Really recommend it if your awning bag on your camper is starting
4:47
to rip. I'm Simon from Blake Hub. Stay tuned for more camping stuff. We'll see you next time
