Inaugural Flip Flop Tournament to be held on Lake Texoma

USA Fishing Trails and the FLIP FLOP Foundation will hold the first Flip Flop Foundation Fishing Tournament at Lake Texoma on October 4, 2014 at Highport Marina. It will be a day of fishing, food and entertainment supporting the Gabe Carter Family.

There will be separate Bass and Striped Bass categories with separate rules and weigh-ins. The Bass tournament will follow the same rules as the Bud Light Trail. Use the BLT entry form for early registration – no membership is required for the Flip Flop Tournament. Online Early Registration ends at 5:00 pm on Friday, October 3rd, after that you can still register but you will need to bring your receipt and fill out an entry form the morning of the tournament.

The Striper Tournament category will follow the Flip Flop Foundation rules and early registration online is available. A $10 late fee will be assessed for registration the morning of the tournament. Team entry is $200 for two adults or $120 for one adult and one child 16 or under. If you need a guide, please make your request at the time of registration. Guide fees are the anglers’ responsibility. Average price on a guide boat (4 – 6 anglers) is $125. Prices will vary.

Lake Texoma TP&WD regulations will apply to the tournament. Contestants may keep up to 10 Striped bass and no culling is allowed. Two striped bass over 20” are allowed to be kept as part of the 10 fish limit. Only the largest two stripers caught by each adult team may be weighed in. One fish for a minor contestant may be weighed in. The fish should be kept on ice after they are caught and will be returned to the contestants after they are weighed.

USA Fishing Trails will be running both tournaments. Payouts will be for Big Fish, 1st and 2nd place teams. Great prizes in the Raffle Drawing include Yeti coolers, gift cards, Big Green Egg, TFO rods, Clean Max Vacuum cleaner, Nautilus memberships, 1 and 2 nights stays at Tanglewood Resort and more!

Proceeds from the tournament will go to the Gabe Carter Family of Pottsboro, Texas. Gabe had a passion for the outdoors and was an avid fishing and hunting enthusiast. Born on Nov. 29, 1983, Gabe passed away on Lake Ray Roberts on Oct. 8 2011, leaving behind a wife and young child.

Fishing Report from TPWD (Apr. 17)

GOOD. Water normal stain; 58 degrees; 1.53 feet below pool. Striped bass fishing is great drifting live shad around the islands or past the bridges near the rivers. Rain should finish off the spawn and look for bait on the banks with feeding fish near them. Top waters are working on sandy flats in 2-8 feet of water. Smallmouth bass are good on live shad along the bluffs on the banks in 2-4 feet of water. Also fair on spooks early and look for largemouth off the banks in 6-12 feet of water on main lake points near rocks. Catfish are fair on cut shad along the rocks in 30-45 feet of water. Drifting cut rough fish or gizzard shad in 5-10 feet of water near the river could produce a big fish after a rain with an inflow of dirty water. Crappie are good on brush piles in 12-18 feet of water on jigs using electronics to locate active fish working in and out of the brush. Look for spawners shallow with warmer temperatures in the forecast. Report by Jacob Orr, Guaranteed Guide Service Lake Texoma. Threadfin shad are spawning along the banks. Hybrid stripers are good on topwaters in the morning along rocky banks. Some days the egrets are working leading the way to fish. Some schooling activity under gulls. After the morning bite ends switch to swimbaits and Alabama rigs in 10-25 feet of water on the edges and dropoffs. This pattern should hold for the next 4-6 weeks while shad spawn near docks and banks. Report by John Blasingame, Adventure Texoma Outdoors.
