Because Life is Better at the Lake

Super Saturday/Butterfly Day at Hagerman NWR October 14

Friends of Hagerman NWR
Friends of Hagerman NWR Foundation is a 501(c)(3) corporation whose mission is to instill reverence, respect and conservation of our wild creatures and habitats through supporting environmental education, recreational activities, and programs of Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Butterflies will be celebrated at Hagerman NWR on Saturday, October 14, from 10 am - 4 pm.  The refuge will be holding a Super Saturday, to wind up National Wildlife Refuge Week, with walks, talks, crafts and more, all on the butterfly theme.

Activities are free and family friendly.  Start off the day with a garden walk, paint a plaster butterfly or fold a paper one.  See butterfly parts under the microscope and learn butterfly facts, how to garden for butterflies and the miracle of the Monarch migration.

If Mother Nature cooperates, there will be demonstrations of tagging migrating Monarchs.  In addition, you can purchase native plants, enjoy a demonstration of decorative rock painting and bring a picnic for lunch, or have a Flying Pig (hot dog) lunch for a small donation.

Other crafts include Butterfly Migration, Butterfly Finger Puppets and Wildflower Seed Balls.  There will be chalk art and butterfly tattoos for the youngsters, as well.

See the schedule of events on the Butterfly Garden web page.
