Hundreds of cyclist head to Lake Texoma

It’s August so it must be time for the Annual Kiwanis Red River Bike Rally! The 10th Annual Red River Bike Rally will be held on August 15, 2015. Last year over 450 riders participated in the Red River Bike Rally and even more are expected this year. Routes are mostly on country roads with little traffic in the beautiful north Texas countryside.

Riders can choose from 6 different routes from the 8-mile family route to the 100-mile Century route. Each one offers a unique and challenging experience along with plenty of ride support and fully stocked rest stops every 10 to 12 miles. Mechanics and SAG support will be available on all routes. Safety will always be the top priority.

Affectionately dubbed by riders as "Hotter than Hotter 'N Hell," it's the ideal preparation for one of the largest rides in the nation. All routes start and finish at Tanglewood Resort and wind thru country roads west of Denison and Sherman. Routes are posted on the rally website www.kiwanisredriverrally.com.

Thanks to the hard work of the folks at Texoma Bicycle works and Texoma Cycling Club, riders can use www.RideWithGPS.com to prepare for the ride. Century Riders (100 miles) must complete 53 miles prior to 12:00 Noon. At High Noon all riders arriving at the Wall Street point will be re-directed to the 88 mile “bail-out” route.

In addition to the 8-mile family route, riders can chose from 26-miles. 45-miles, 62-mile gravel route, 80-miles or the100-miles routes.
Special room rates are available at Tanglewood resort and Conference Center featuring a high-carb breakfast buffet, family/spa discounts and more! The buffet opens at 6:30 am.

Kiwanis International has 8,000 local clubs in 96 countries around the world with over 260,000 adult and 320,000 youth members. Each year Kiwanis Clubs sponsor nearly 150,000 service projects raising more than $107 million for children’s charities. Last year the Red River Bike Rally raised over $8,000 for local children’s charities.

Fishing Report from TPWD (Mar. 27)

GOOD. Water normal stain; 57 degrees; 1.86 feet below pool. Striped bass are good using live shad and cut bait anchored in 45-65 feet of water thumping the boat and running a splasher to get the fish under the boat. Recent rains will have a lot of big female fish up river but look for them on flats and structure with swim baits in 12-25 feet of water. Crappie are good on jigs using electronics to fish brush in the little mineral arm 15-22 feet of water. Also seeing fish in the creeks 2-4 feet of water on brush. Smallmouth or largemouth bass are slow fishing docks and structure with crankbaits and spinnerbaits. Look for SM on gravel beds along the bluffs in 6-12 feet of water. Catfish are slow on cut gizzard shad anchored near the rivers in 5-10 feet of water but starting to see eater size fish coming on ledges and flats in 40-55 feet of water. Report by Jacob Orr, Guaranteed Guide Service Lake Texoma. Striped bass continue to be caught with Alabama rigs or sassy shad targeting ledges and structures in 5-40 feet of water. Some sporadic schooling activity and bird action. Some fish are moving into creeks. The shad spawn should begin as the water near 68 degrees. This runs around six weeks, bringing predator fish shallow and kicks off topwater season. Report by John Blasingame, Adventure Texoma Outdoors.
