All Polar Bear Plungers - Unite!

UPDATE ON MY JAN 28th POST: Insider information says that Cedar Mills is searching for deeper water so that the people gathered on the dock platform for the Polar Bear Plunge at 3:30 pm this Saturday Feb 16th will actually be able to PLUNGE, not just jump. Apparently some local sponsors want to see us get soaking wet, rather than simply wade in or jump in up to our knees. They want something more akin to a dunking barrel, only this one will be the frigid lake! Cedar Mills' says their platform will be positioned so that the annual event participants get a good view of the plungers along the beach area, but further out to provide for a good show. You still have a couple days to collect sponsorships and dig out your swimsuits to participate and raise money for local fire departments and special needs' kids. C'mon in! The weather is forecast to be partly cloudy, in the low 50s with ZERO CHANCE OF RAIN. I'm all for more rain for Lake Texoma, but just not this Saturday afternoon... ***************************************** MY JAN 28th POST: When I first moved to Lake Texoma and saw the signs for the Polar Bear Plunge back in 2007 I thought, "Those people must be crazy!!!" Then I went to the event and watched people jump off the dock at Cedar Mills into the cold February water. Last year the temperatures were not frigid, but it was cold and rainy. It was NOT the sort of weather that lures anybody out onto or into the waters of Lake Texoma. Except, of course, people who are jumping for a cause. Now I finally get it. I understand that there is a purpose for the Polar Bear Plunge event and I really want to be part of it this year on 2/16/ at 3:30 pm. My husband said, "You're going to wear a bikini, right?" And I said, "In your dreams..." You can wear whatever you like, as long as you jump into the water and manage to make it out without requiring CPR. I think I can do that! Linda Mayo, Special Events Coordinator at Cedar Mills said that this year marks the 8th year Cedar Mills has hosted the fund raiser for Western Grayson County Special Olympics and three local volunteer fire departments. Whitesboro TX is a hub school for special needs kids, so Whitesboro ISD and S&S CISD (Sadler and Southmayd) schools all get involved in the event. Veteran plungers Claire and Dave Belling of TexomaHideaway.com are doing it again this year. Well, at least Dave is doing it. Claire said, "Dave is going in again! He needs sponsors and/or company! If he can do it, everyone can!" Lest you think that showing up on Saturday February 16th will only be a bunch of crazy people jumping in the lake and that's it... think again. The Polar Bear Plunge is just part of the fun. There are all kinds of games for the landlubbers, and the plungers, once they come back ashore and dry off. Games are scheduled from 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm and includes a fire hose competition between the local volunteer fire departments. And there's also the annual Arctic Blast Dinner and Dance starting about 6:00 pm that includes an Italian Buffet and complimentary wine and beer. The band Class Act will play again this year, and they are just great. I wore myself out dancing all night last year! Lake Texoma

Fishing Report from TPWD (Apr. 24)

GOOD. Water normal stain; 63 degrees; 1.32 feet below pool. Striped bass fishing is great on live shad in 30-40 feet of water on main lake points and ledges. Top waters working early around rocky banks, be on the lookout for white birds on the banks early. It will only get better as the striper finish their spawn and the shad start theirs. Crappie fishing is good on brush piles using jigs in 14-18 feet of water. Electronics help locate active fish roaming and sticking the brush. Monkeys milk and mo glo colors working the best. Bass fishing is good on top waters early and swim baits off the banks late morning. Live shad producing numbers and big spawned out fish along the bluffs. Catfish are fair on cut shad and prepared baits anchored in 40-50 feet of water in creek channels and near ledges. Look along the rocks for blues and channels spawning and looking for shad. Report by Jacob Orr, Guaranteed Guide Service Lake Texoma. Hybrid stripers are good on topwater along the bank early in the morning. Watch for egrets and seagulls. Then switch to sassy shad 4 inch glo on flats and points in 10-20 feet of water. Shad continue to spawn. Report by John Blasingame, Adventure Texoma Outdoors.
