As part of the Denison Main Street Fall Festival, a new documentary film, “Denison Dam – Taming the Raging Red”, will premier this Saturday, October 4, 2014 at the Rialto Theatre in downtown Denison, Texas. Showing will be held at 10:30 am, 12 noon and 1:30 pm. The showings are free and DVD copies of the documentary will be available for purchase.
Written, directed and produced by Gene Lenore, the film has been in development for several years. Lenore says the “Denison Dam can trace its roots back to the disastrous 1927 flood of the Mississippi River that inundated more than 27,000 square miles of America’s heartland.”
The documentary includes scenes from the construction footage in the dam’s power house area in the early 1940s; the official dam dedication on July 1, 1944; and footage of an American military demonstration on Lake Texoma. The re-enactment showed how invasion landings were being made in the Pacific Theatre during World War II as part of a War Bond effort in June, 1945. The film also contains scenes from Lake Texoma’s Coney Island which was located at Burns Run, in the 1950’s.
This year marks the 70th anniversary of the closing of the floodgates at Denison Dam and the beginnings of Lake Texoma. Lenoir plans to enter the documentary in film festivals and take the film on the road to make presentations to interested groups. Lenore has set up a FB page Denison Dam 2014 with clips and presentations schedules.
